Discussion: Workplace Environment Assessment
How healthy is your workplace?

You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.

There are many factors and measures that may impact organizational health. Among these is civility. While an organization can institute policies designed to promote such things as civility, how can it be sure these are managed effectively? In this Discussion, you will examine the use of tools in measuring workplace civility.Workplace Environment Assessment Essay.

Workplace Environment Assessment

Nurses play a crucial role in improving the health of patients, but they must work within an environment that is healthy, empowering and safe. The results of my work environment assessment show that both nurses and managers demonstrate behaviors that are disrespectful, rude, insensitive or discourteous. Based on the results, my workplace is uncivil because both coworkers and managers demonstrate behaviors that do not show respect toward another individual that makes the individual feel not valued.  According to Abdollahzadeh et al (2017), incivility is typically discourteous and rude, demonstrating disrespect for others.    For example, there was an instance where a surgeon in the operating room rudely reprimanded a graduate nurse who handed the incorrect device. In another instance, while in the nursing station, a nurse rolled her eyes at a coworkers’ story.

My workplace is not civil because nurses, doctors, and supervisors do not have a culture of kindness and treat coworkers in a disrespectful and undignified way. There are several forms of bullying and intimidation in the organization.  Civility in the workplace is often demonstrated through politeness, manners, courtesy and a universal understanding of the concerns, feelings, wishes and rights of others.  Clark (2015) indicates that a civil and healthy work environment is an environment where individuals are able to communicate in an effective and clear way and manage disagreements in a responsible, respectful way.Workplace Environment Assessment Essay.

The one instance when I experienced incivility in the workplace is when I sought support from my supervisor after I had a conflict with a rude patient.  The supervisor asked me what had happened and when I told him that the patient was behaving rudely towards me,  he ordered me to give an apology to the patient in the presence of other patients.  I apologized and after that, whenever I encountered the patient, she would turn off her face scornfully. This issue was addressed when I told my supervisor that he should have offered me appropriate support and should not have reprimanded me.   The supervisor apologized to me and admitted that he behaved unprofessionally.   Smith et al (2018) claim that the American Nurses Association recommends that nurses are required to intervene when incivility happens in order to facilitate healthy working relationships in the healthcare team and nursing profession.  Additionally, managers should lessen the occurrence of incivility along with the damages it causes.Workplace Environment Assessment Essay.
