Note: Throughout the program you will be reading excerpts from the ANA’s Scope & Standards of Practice for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. It is essential to your success on the ANCC board certification exam for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioners that you know the scope of practice of the advanced practice psychiatric/mental health nurse. You should also be able to differentiate between the generalist RN role in psychiatric/mental health nursing and the advanced practice nurse role.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

The PMHNP practice environment in my home state (Florida)

The PMHNP   in Florida State practices in a restricted practice environment. A reduced practice means that the PMHNP can take part in one or more aspects of the nurse practitioner practice and but there should be team management, delegation or supervision by a licensed physician to be able to deliver care to patients (Peterson, 2017). The PMHNP in Florida is mandated to practice under a physician’s supervision and in accordance with the written protocol which is filed with the state board of nursing.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

According to Buppert (2017), a practice protocol delineates the method and level of supervision of the practice of the PMHNP entailing an illustration of the duties of the physician and the nurse practitioner, the management areas of the nurse practitioner as well as procedures and conditions for identification of when the nurse practitioner should be evaluated by the physician or consult the physician. The PMHNP in Florida has reduced the authority to prescribe controlled drugs. According to Barton Associates (2010), a nurse practitioner might prescribe schedule two to five controlled drugs under physician supervision as delineated by the protocol.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

A comparison of the PMHNP practice environment in Florida with a state in which I would like to Practice (Nevada)

The PMHNP practice environment in Nevada widely differs from the PMHNP practice environment in the state of Florida. Compared to Florida State where the PMHP practice is practice environment is restricted, the PMHNP in Nevada practice environment is liberal meaning that the PMHNPs have full practice authority. According to Peterson(2017), full practice means that Nevada licensure and practice laws authorize nurse practitioners to make evaluations, diagnosis, ordering and interpreting diagnostics tests, starting and following-up treatment and prescribing medications within their scope of practice.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

The PMHNP is Nevada has the authority to practice independently without being supervised by a licensed physician.   Barton Associates indicate that nurse practitioners in Nevada have the authority to make a diagnosis, prescribe medications and treat patients provided that they have the qualifications to perform these activities. However, in order to autonomously prescribe controlled drugs after practicing under the supervising physician for two years and becoming certified by the state.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

A professional issue a new PMHNP will need to consider and address with the credentialing process

A new PMHNP should understand professional issues surrounding the credentialing process. A new PMHNP must understand that the process of credentialing involves the authentication of certification, education, licensure as well as reference checks.   Credentialing is aimed at ensuring that healthcare professionals have the appropriate experience, training, and education to provide quality and safe care. Credentialing agencies credential nurse practitioners to make sure that they provide safe care. Stewart and DeNisco (2018) assert nurse practitioners must understand the regulations that guide and impact the credentialing process.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

Credentialing follows licensure and is the procedure via which a healthcare provider gets the authority to practice in a chosen hospital or healthcare setting. Generally, the process of credentialing involves verification of certification, licensure education and reference checks. The credentialing process offers extra protections to the patients by requiring healthcare professionals to demonstrate appropriate education, skill, and instruction maintenance in practice (Stewart &  DeNisco, 2018).Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

According to NAPNAP (2016), the credentialing process is achieved via several activities designed at collecting, verifying and evaluating information pertinent to the professional performance of the practitioner. The process of credentialing involves completing an application accompanied by submitting a proof of state certification/licensure, education, a summary of employment history, immunization status, and a photograph. Preparing a professional portfolio outlining the qualifications of the applicant can valuable in facilitating the credentialing process. After submitting the application, the qualifications of the applicant are verified, a check on criminal background performed an evaluation performed to assess whether malpractice payments, adverse actions or licensure disciplinary actions have happened. After verification of credentials and completion of a background check, the PMHNP can start working.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

Checklist for passing the national certification examination

I will prepare for the national certification exam by first completing my PMHNP master’s program, setting the examination fee aside and deciding the study materials I will use. After completing the PMHNP and confirming that I am eligible to sit for the ANCC certification examination, I will make an online application and pay the required exam fees.   After receiving verification from the ANCC, the next step will involve developing a study plan. I will personalize the study plan to meet my learning needs and personal schedule. I will set aside three hours, thrice a week.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.

Drafting a study plan will be followed by visiting the ANCC to check for review study material, entailing practice content and books. According to Windland-Brown and Dunphy (2017), the ANCC website has the PMHNP certification handbook, including practice questions, and test content outline. The test content outline delineates the major practice domains and categories as well as topics and subtopics that the exam covers. I will then assess my knowledge so as to identify the topics that I am strong and weak in and break down the content into segments based on the sections that I will be able to cover in every study session. I will devote less time on areas of my strength and more time on topics I am weak in. I will prioritize study sessions over any other activity that might come up.Week 1 Practicum Journal Entry: Certification Plan.
