Literature review
The study seeks to determine how personnel engaged in the business environment concerning the importance of technical skills. The research question is presented that: ‘how prepared are business personnel to use newly presented technology in terms of having the technical skills to meet the required proficiency?’ Two journal articles were identified to provide background information on the research topic and present a tentative solution that would then be tested in the study. Campbell (2018) presents the results of a study to evaluate the experiences of business graduates when they join the workplace. The study notes that technology has shaped the business environment, particularly job structures so that they now require technical skills in addition to the business management skills to navigate the workplace. The study identified three main themes that overlapped. Firstly, technology has influenced job structures and careers as it places new demands on the required skills. Secondly, adapting to the workplace demands requires job-related training that focuses on the specific technologies to be used. Finally, technical skills complement non-technology skills to facilitate efforts to complete work tasks with the focus on business implications. The study concludes that technology trend is a reality in the business environment, brought about by a need to improve workplace efficiency. In addition, it acknowledges that business personnel require technical skills to allow them to navigate technology to complete work tasks (Campbell, 2018).
Berglund and Andersson (2012) present the results of a study to evaluate the importance of workplace training. It acknowledges that the training is required when a gap exists in knowledge and skills, a reality occasioned by the fact that technology associated with the business environment is very extensive.Research design methods and applications. The skills that one workplace requires is not necessarily the same skills that another workplace would require. The implication is that it would be unrealistic to expect personnel to acquire all the necessary skills(both technical and non-technical) in prior learning. The study results indicated that every job environment has unique skills and knowledge requirements based on logical activities. It also mentions that the logic for appreciating technical skills is dependent on the workplace technology, to imply that business personnel require technical skills that match the specific technology in their workplace to allow them make full use these technology.Research design methods and applications.
The two articlesdraw attention to the differences to the peculiarities in the workplace in terms of required skills. They note that training would typically focus on non-technical skills and routine technical skills. However, they also note that each workplace that forms part of the business environment makes use of unique sets of technologies to improve personnel efficiency while complementing the business activities. The implication is that even as personnel join the workplace having received the basic training to allow them complete workplace tasks, they would still require the unique technical skills to allow them to use the specific technologies in the workplace. This information is useful to the current study since it shows that preparation for using technology in the business environment is a deliberate process that occurs through training targeted at specific technology. In addition, the two studies support the notion that preparation for the workplace is a graded exercises that allows personnel to move from novice to advanced beginner, competent, proficient and expert even as they become more proficient in using the technology. As a result, the two articles inform the present study.Research design methods and applications.
