Defining Quality Essay.

As health care consumers, we all expect quality care and positive outcomes. It is important as professionals that we meet these demands of health care consumers. Consider the work of the major theorists you examined in this week’s Resources, and think about how these theories apply to your own experience as a health care customer and/or practitioner.Defining Quality Essay.
Post your definition of quality, and apply it to the work of one major quality theorist (e.g., Donabedian, Juran, Deming, Triple Aim (IHI) – Berwick). Identify a practice problem that you have had some experience with as a customer or as a practitioner, and explain how eliminating wasteful practices could have improved the experience. Include how your definition of quality applies to that experience.
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be written at the capstone level (see checklist).Defining Quality Essay.

Defining Quality

Quality refers to actions that meet patient needs in an effective, safe and affordable manner that also maximizes the benefit to patients without equally increasing risk or harm. This definition can be applied to the work of quality theorist Joseph Juran, who was among the first people to set the foundation of what is currently recognized as quality. According to Juran, quality comprises of product features that meet the customers’ needs and thus offer product satisfaction. Juran also defined quality as fitness to utilize, meaning that a good quality product does what the consumer anticipated it to do and that the consumer can count on the product to accomplish its purpose (Katsoni et al, 2017).Defining Quality Essay.

Overuse of antibiotics by patients is a practice problem that I have had experience as a practitioner. Individuals with colds regularly visit their healthcare providers to obtain antibiotics. Although practitioners understand that antibiotic overuse puts the patients at the risk of developing antimicrobial resistance, practitioners are often coerced to satisfy the expectation of patients and thus provide the requested antibiotics. Elimination of wasteful practices such as prescribing antibiotics to patients upon request could have improved my experience by enabling me to provide the right intervention. Veves et al (2018) assert that quality healthcare is offering the correct healthcare intervention in the right manner by the right health professional to the right person to attain the best outcomes possible. But antibiotic overuse has a direct connection with patient harm. Lyu et al (2017) claim that evidence demonstrates that overutilization of antibiotic medications exposes individuals to the risk of developing resistance and being infected with Clostridium difficile.Defining Quality Essay.

My definition of quality applies to the experience in that overuse of antibiotics by patients increases harm rather than benefitting them. Hawkins et al (2016) indicate that health professionals should provide quality care by understanding the harms, benefits along with relative costs of interventions, eliminate or decrease the interventions that might be harmful or provide no benefit and select care settings and interventions that minimize harms, maximize benefits and lessen costs.Defining Quality Essay.
